Key Defined Terms - Commonwealth Code
Key terms defined in CMC Title 1 General Provisions (§§ 101-121).
Northern Mariana Islands : The area formerly known as the Mariana Islands District of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, lying north of 14° N, south of 21° N, west of 150° E, and east of 144° E. See § 101.
Commonwealth : The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a self-governing U.S. commonwealth in political union with the United States. See § 102.
Covenant : The Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America, established in 1976. See § 103.
Public Purpose : Any use or purpose that is primarily for the benefit of the general public rather than private individuals or entities; as defined in applicable provisions of CMC Title 1. See § 121.
