TITLE 9: VEHICLE CODE DIVISION 2: REGISTRATION AND LICENSES § 2205. Classes of License; Age Requirements. (a) The following classes of operator’s licenses are established: (1) All two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles. For the purposes of this subsection (1), a foreign operator’s license or license from any other territory or state of the United States that would permit the holder to operate a two or three-wheeled motor vehicle, including but not limited to a motorcycle, motor scooter, and moped as defined by this chapter, shall be sufficient to operate the same in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands if that operator is present for a period of less than thirty days in the Commonwealth. (2) All two-axle motor vehicles. Vehicles in this class may pull a trailer weighing less than 4,000 pounds. For the purposes of this subsection (2), a foreign operator’s license or license from any other territory or state of the United States that would permit the holder to operate a two-axle vehicle shall be sufficient to operate the same in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands if that operator is present for a period of less than thirty days in the Commonwealth. (3) All buses, labor trucks, three-axle vehicles, and all class two vehicles pulling a trailer. (b) A chauffeur’s license shall be required for: (1) Any vehicle for hire, other than a taxicab, used in transporting passengers; and (2) Any vehicle capable of carrying 10 or more passengers used in conveying children to and from school. (c) No operator’s license or learner’s permit shall be issued for any class of license specified in subsection (a) of this section unless the applicant shall have complied with all applicable provisions of this division, and: (1) Has attained the age of: (i) Sixteen years, in the case of an operator’s license or learner’s permit issued under subsections (a)(1), (a)(2) or (a)(3) of this section; (ii) Twenty-one years, in the case of an operator’s license or learner’s permit issued under subsections (b)(1) or (b)(2) of this section; and (2) In the case of operator’s licenses or learner’s permits issued under subsections (b)(1) or (b)(2) of this section, shall also be the holder of an operator’s license issued under subsection (a)(3) of this section. (d) An operator’s license or learner’s permit issued for any class enumerated in subsection (a) of this section is valid only for the operation of vehicles included in that class.
