§ 424. Saipan- Schools

TITLE 1: GENERAL PROVISION § 424. Saipan: Schools. (a) The Chalan Kanoa Elementary School shall be known as the “William S. Reyes Elementary School.” (b) The San Roque Elementary School shall be known as the “Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School.” (c) The San Antonio Middle School shall be named the “Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School”. The Public School System shall install a new sign bearing the new name which shall be prominently and permanently attached to the main building or affixed at the main entrance of the campus, and the height of the letters shall not be less than ten inches. Source: PL 3-52, §§ 1, 2; (c) enacted by PL 19-55 § 2 (July 26, 2016). Commission Comment: Subsection (a) honors William S. Reyes for dedicated and outstanding service in the education of Commonwealth residents and citizens. Subsection (b) honors Gregorio T. Camacho for dedicated and outstanding service to the residents and citizens of San Roque. In addition to savings and severability clauses, PL 19-55 included the following Finding and Purpose section: Section 1. Finding and Purpose. The Legislature finds that Mr. Francisco Mendiola Sablan’s esteemed working career has benefited the entire Commonwealth, most especially the residents and community of San Antonio Village. Upon the opening of San Antonio Elementary School, Mr. Sablan served as its Principal from 1971 to 1985. The Delegation further finds that prior to serving as San Antonio Elementary School’s Principal; he served as a Congressman in the Mariana Islands Legislative District. Mr. Sablan spent majority of his professional career in the education field. The renaming the San Antonio Middle School, formerly San Antonio Elementary School, is to honor Francisco Mendiola Sablan for his years of service in the education field, and for serving as the school’s first principal. The purpose of this Act is to rename the San Antonio Middle School to “Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School.” The Commission renamed this section from “Saipan: Elementary Schools” to “Saipan: Schools.”
